Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company makes chips that other companies design. As a foundry it manufactures semiconductors on silicon wafers from the proprietary integrated circuit designs its customers give it, and sells no chip of its own. It was founded in 1987 as a joint venture among the R.O.C. government and other private investors, is headquartered in the Hsinchu Science Park in Taiwan, and states its figures in NT$. The common shares have been listed on the Taiwan Stock Exchange since September 1994 and the American depositary shares on the New York Stock Exchange since October 1997.

    The fabs

In operation are one 150mm wafer fab, six 200mm wafer fabs, nine 300mm wafer fabs and seven advanced backend fabs. Nine of them sit in the Hsinchu Science Park with the corporate headquarters, two in the Central Taiwan Science Park, seven in the Southern Taiwan Science Park, two in the United States, one in Shanghai, one in Nanjing and one in Japan. ESMC owns a parcel of approximately 513,557 square meters in the city of Dresden in Germany, the site of Fab 24. The company owns all the buildings and equipment for its fabs other than certain equipment under leases at testing areas, and it leases most of the land from the science park administrations and the Kaohsiung City Government under agreements that come up for renewal on dates between 2026 and 2045.
