What the company does
GameStop sells games, collectibles and entertainment products through its stores and ecommerce sites, mainly under the GameStop, EB Games and Micromania names. The company states that its business model is expanding beyond retail to include deploying its cash and other liquidity into acquisitions and control transactions. Its strategy has two pillars: capital allocation, meaning acquiring, investing in or partnering with other businesses, and running its legacy retail business for cash by optimizing its store fleet. It is based in Grapevine, Texas.
How the cash is managed
The board has delegated management of the company's cash and liquidity, and review of potential acquisitions, to an Investment Committee made up of Ryan Cohen, its Chairman and Chief Executive Officer, and two independent directors. Under its Investment Policy, permitted investments include cash equivalents, U.S. Treasury and other fixed income securities, equity securities listed on major exchanges, derivatives and options, and certain crypto-currencies, including Bitcoin. Members of the committee may at times invest personally in the same securities as the company. The company states that it has no binding agreement for a specific transaction.
