What the company does
Elevance Health sells health cover and health services. It served approximately 45.2 million medical members through its affiliated health plans at the end of 2025, and describes itself as one of the largest health insurers in the United States by medical membership. Its position rests on something structural: it is an independent licensee of the Blue Cross and Blue Shield Association, which gives it the Blue brands in a defined list of states.
Where it holds the Blue licence
It is the Blue Cross licensee for California, and the Blue Cross and Blue Shield licensee for Colorado, Connecticut, Georgia, Indiana, Kentucky, Maine, Missouri excluding 30 counties around Kansas City, Nevada, New Hampshire, New York in the New York City metropolitan area and upstate, Ohio, Virginia excluding the Northern Virginia suburbs of Washington D.C., and Wisconsin. In most of those areas it trades as Anthem Blue Cross, or Anthem Blue Cross and Blue Shield. It also works through arrangements with other Blue licensees and other partners, and serves members in many states under the Wellpoint, Carelon, MMM and Simply Healthcare names.
