What the company does
Travelers is a holding company whose subsidiaries write commercial and personal property and casualty insurance for businesses, government bodies, associations and individuals. It is incorporated in Minnesota, and the filing describes it as one of the oldest insurance organisations in the United States, dating back to 1853. Its principal executive offices are in New York, with further executive offices in Hartford, Connecticut and St. Paul, Minnesota.
The market it sits in
The filing is unusually specific about the shape of the industry, and the numbers say more about the business than a product list would. Citing A.M. Best, it puts the United States market at roughly 1,100 property and casualty groups made up of about 2,600 companies. Of those groups, the top 150 accounted for about 94 percent of the industry's total net written premiums in 2024. So the market has thousands of participants and is concentrated in a small fraction of them.
