What the company does
Ambarella designs low-power system-on-a-chip semiconductors, known as SoCs, and software for edge and physical artificial intelligence (AI) applications. The company was founded and incorporated in the Cayman Islands in January 2004, and its operating subsidiary is based in Santa Clara, California. Its chips go into video security cameras, automotive camera systems, robots, drones and consumer cameras. Ambarella is fabless, so outside foundries and contractors make, assemble and test its chips. It employed 959 people at 31 January 2026.
What it makes
The core of the product line is CVflow, the company's proprietary AI accelerator, which is also called a deep learning neural network processor. The third generation of CVflow sits in three newer families built on 4 nm and 5 nm process technology: CV7, CV3 and N1. The CV7 family targets automotive, security and robotics systems. CV3 is a family of central domain controllers for partially to fully automated driving. The N1 SoC can run large language model inference with models up to 34 billion parameters on a single chip.
Ambarella also sells vision processors that handle video and image processing for cameras and drones. It offers adaptive AI radar software, a B8 SerDes chip that carries data up to 10 meters from an image sensor, and separately licensed software modules. The Cooper development platform bundles software, hardware and AI models for customers building on its chips. The company typically introduces two to three new silicon products per year.
Where the chips are used
Ambarella groups its markets into Internet of Things (IoT) and automotive. In IoT, the uses include enterprise and public security cameras, home security cameras, body-worn cameras, and sports and action cameras. Automotive uses include front ADAS cameras, driver and cabin monitoring cameras, electronic mirrors, video recorders and AI telematics for commercial fleets. The CV3 family aims at driving systems from Level 2+ to Level 4. The company also describes emerging uses in fixed robots, such as factory inspection, and in mobile robots, such as warehouse machines and drones.
Who buys from it
Ambarella sells to original design manufacturers (ODMs) and, in automotive, to Tier-1 suppliers. It calls these its customers. The original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) whose products use the chips are its end customers. Sales to customers in Asia were about 88% of revenue in fiscal year 2026, and substantially all sales have been denominated in United States dollars. WT Microelectronics, the company's non-exclusive sales representative and fulfillment partner in Asia other than Japan, accounted for about 70% of revenue.
Sales start with a design win, when a customer chooses Ambarella's chip for a product. Volume production may begin 12 to 18 months later. Product life cycles typically run 12 to 24 months in many target markets and longer in automotive and robotics. Purchase orders usually arrive 20 to 30 weeks before delivery. The company has direct sales staff in the United States, Asia and Europe, with sales offices in Santa Clara and Hong Kong. It also has business development offices in China, Germany, Japan, South Korea and Taiwan. Revenue has tended to be higher in the second and third fiscal quarters.
How the chips are made
Samsung Electronics supplies the substantial majority of the SoCs, from facilities in Austin, Texas and South Korea. Ambarella currently manufactures in the 10 nm, 5 nm and 4 nm process nodes and has taped out its first design on a 2 nm node. Assembly and testing go to contractors including Signetics, STATS ChipPAC, ASE, Sigurd and King Yuan Electronics. The company places firm orders with suppliers up to 40 weeks before expected delivery, often without a matching customer purchase order. It has no guaranteed production capacity from any supplier.
Competition and intellectual property
In IoT, the company names HiSilicon, Novatek, NVIDIA, Qualcomm and Sigmastar as its primary competitors. In automotive cameras, it names Horizon Robotics, Mobileye, Novatek, NVIDIA, Qualcomm, Renesas Electronics and Texas Instruments. The filing says many competitors are larger and have greater resources.
Ambarella held 390 issued United States patents at 31 January 2026, along with 14 in Europe, 24 in China and 8 in Japan. It also had 58 pending United States patent applications. Certain products are subject to export controls administered by the Bureau of Industry and Security, and a customer placed on the BIS Entity List would generally be off limits to the company.
Its people
Of the 959 employees, 252 are in the United States, 612 are in Asia and 95 are in Europe. The Asian total includes 372 in Taiwan and 225 in China. About 75% work in research and development, 23% in sales, marketing and administration, and 2% in operations. Research and development runs through four design centers in the United States, China, Italy and Taiwan. Average employee tenure is about 8.1 years.
