What the company does

Cimpress helps businesses build brands through customized physical marketing products and branded merchandise, selling mainly through websites. Founded in 1995, it describes itself as the global leader in web-to-print mass customization. Its brands include VistaPrint, WIRmachenDRUCK, Pixartprinting, Pens.com, BuildASign, druck.at, Drukwerkdeal, easyflyer, Exaprint, Packstyle, Printi, Tradeprint and BoxUp. It has more than 16,000 employees and serves markets mainly in North America, Western Europe, Australia and New Zealand, plus smaller businesses in India and Brazil.

How the business is organised

Cimpress manages its businesses in a decentralized, autonomous way. The CEOs and managing directors of each business hold the responsibility, authority and resources. About 100 of the employees work in central activities that must be done centrally, such as tax, treasury, internal audit, legal, investor relations and the CEO and CFO functions. The company states its uppermost financial objective as maximizing intrinsic value per share.

How mass customization works

The filing names three ingredients: web-to-print stores with many customizable products, software-driven order aggregation, and design tools that combine design software, AI-assisted design and human designers, often in low-cost regions. Software sorts many varied orders into groups of similar ones and sends each group to a specialized production line. The filing says an order of 250 standard business cards at VistaPrint in Europe and North America needs less than 14 seconds of labor for pre-press, printing, cutting and packaging, against an hour or more at traditional printers.

The five segments

- VistaPrint covers VistaPrint websites in North America, Western Europe, Australia, New Zealand, India and Singapore. It also includes 99designs by Vista, VistaCreate, the Vista x Wix partnership and VistaPrint Corporate Solutions. It helps about 11 million small businesses a year. Gross margins were about 55% and advertising was about 15% of revenue. - PrintBrothers includes druck.at, Printdeal and WIRmachenDRUCK. It serves graphic professionals, mainly in Austria, Belgium, Germany, the Netherlands and Switzerland. - The Print Group includes Easyflyer, Exaprint, Mixam, Pixartprinting and Tradeprint. It serves graphic professionals, mainly in France, Italy, Spain and the United Kingdom, and to a lesser extent in the United States. Across these two Upload & Print segments, gross margins averaged about 32% and advertising was about 5% of external revenue. - National Pen runs pens.com and smaller brands selling customized writing instruments, promotional products, apparel and gifts to small and medium-sized businesses. It serves more than a million small businesses a year through e-commerce, direct mail and telesales. Gross margins were about 51% and advertising was about 20% of revenue. Its profits are highly seasonal and fall mostly in the December quarter. - All Other Businesses combines BuildASign, which sells canvas-print wall décor, signage and other large-format products, with Printi in Brazil and a small team working on new channels.

What it sells and where it makes it

Products include business cards, flyers, postcards, signage, promotional products, logo apparel, packaging, books, magazines, wall décor, photo merchandise, and design and digital marketing services. Its businesses operate about 3 million square feet of production space and work with hundreds of external fulfillers. In many cases an order can be produced and shipped the same day. Its businesses increasingly act as fulfillers for each other. The second fiscal quarter, ending 31 December, is the strongest for consumer products such as holiday cards, calendars, canvas prints and photobooks.

Shared capabilities

Cimpress invests centrally in four shared capabilities, and each business chooses how much to use them:

- A mass customization platform (MCP), a cloud-based set of software services, APIs and web applications. - - Central procurement of large-scale capital equipment, shipping services and major raw materials such as paper, plates and ink. -

Competition

The filing describes its markets as intensely competitive, highly fragmented and geographically dispersed. Cimpress says its businesses compete on product range, price, convenience, quality, technology, design tools, customer service, ease of use, and production and delivery speed.
