What the company said with its results

From the third quarter of 2016 results, filed 3 November 2016.

  • Quarterly revenue edged down. Revenue was $61.0 million against $61.5 million, down 0.8%. Gross profit fell 7.0% to $17.6 million, and gross margin was 28.8% against 30.8%.
  • Operating income and EPS fell. Operating income fell 28.5% to $5.0 million and net income fell 41.1% to $2.5 million. Diluted EPS was $0.27 against $0.46 a year earlier.
  • Adjusted EBITDA down $1.4 million. Adjusted EBITDA, a non-GAAP measure, was $8.1 million against $9.4 million a year earlier. The company says it helps in understanding operating performance alongside GAAP measures.
  • Nine-month revenue rose 4.9%. Year-to-date revenue was $190.6 million, up 4.9%. Year-to-date operating income fell 15.6% to $15.5 million, and diluted EPS was $0.81 against $1.12.
  • Same quarterly factors hit nine months. Management said the factors affecting the third quarter had a similar effect on nine-month results.
  • Orders and backlog fell sequentially. Third-quarter orders and backlog both fell from the second quarter. Management tied the decline to vehicle, industrial and European seasonal factors.
  • Heidrive lifted year-over-year orders. Quarterly orders and backlog were higher than a year earlier, which the company attributes to the Heidrive addition.
  • Off-road softness masking new wins. Management said softness in the off-road vehicle industry, together with certain customer challenges, is masking successes from 2016 application wins.
  • Vehicle applications challenged, to persist. Several vehicle applications were stable sequentially, but specific applications are challenged. Management expects that to persist in the near future.
  • U.S. share of sales fell. Sales to U.S. customers were 56% of third-quarter sales against 66% a year earlier. The balance went mainly to Europe, Canada and Asia.
  • Year-to-date U.S. share also lower. Nine-month sales to U.S. customers were 55% of total sales, against 66% in the same period of 2015.
  • Gross margin fell on mix, absorption. Gross margin was 28.8% against 30.8%. Management attributed the decline to product mix and to under-absorbed costs in certain production facilities.
  • Operating expenses rose $0.7 million. Operating expenses rose $0.7 million to $12.6 million. Selling costs were up $0.5 million, reflecting new sales management, Heidrive and other personnel.
  • Compensation cuts offset Heidrive G&A. Lower incentive and deferred compensation costs and tight cost control more than offset the added general and administrative costs from Heidrive.

What the company does

Allient designs, manufactures and sells precision and specialty controlled motion components and systems. It is headquartered in Amherst, New York, and was established in 1962 under the laws of Colorado. The company has 2,478 full-time employees and operations in the United States, Canada, Mexico, Europe and Asia-Pacific. Its target markets are Industrial, Vehicle, Medical, and Aerospace & Defense. Its shares trade on the NASDAQ exchange under the ticker ALNT.

What it sells

Allient sells individual components and integrated controlled motion solutions.

- nano precision positioning systems, servo control systems and motion controllers - digital servo amplifiers and drives - brushless servo, torque and coreless motors, brush motors, integrated motor-drives, gear motors and gearing - incremental and absolute optical encoders - active (electronic) and passive (magnetic) filters for power quality and harmonic issues - Industrial safety rated input/output Modules and Universal Industrial Communications Gateways - light-weighting technologies

The company describes itself as a technology and know-how driven business with three technology pillars: Motion, Controls and Power. It says the name Allient is short for Allied Nexus Technologies and was adopted in 2023, replacing Allied Motion Technologies Inc.

Markets it serves

- Industrial: factory automation, material handling, test and processing equipment for semiconductor manufacturing, nano technology motion systems, and power quality products that filter distortion from variable frequency drives. - Vehicle: electronic power steering, drive-by-wire, actuation systems, HVAC systems and alternative fuel systems. Vehicle types include construction and agricultural equipment, trucks, buses, boats and recreational vehicles. - Medical: surgical robots, prosthetics, infusion pumps, nuclear imaging systems, radiology equipment, kidney dialysis equipment, respiratory ventilators and patient handling equipment. - Aerospace & Defense: guided missiles, smart munitions systems, weapons systems on armed personnel carriers, unmanned vehicles, security and access control, airport screening devices and light-weighting vehicle technologies.

How it sells

Allient sells through its own direct sales force and through authorized manufacturers' representatives, agents and distributors. These channels cover Asia-Pacific, Europe, Canada, Israel and the Americas. Customers are end users and original equipment manufacturers (OEMs), and most sales go directly to OEMs.

Products are designed in Technology Centers. Allient Solution Centers in China, Europe and North America design and sell components and integrated systems, and may also handle final assembly, integration and testing for customers in their region.

No customer exceeded 10% of total sales. About 55% of sales went to customers in the United States, and 45% went to customers primarily in Europe, Canada and Asia-Pacific.

Most backlog converts to sales in approximately three to nine months. Because lead times are short, the company says backlog is not a reliable indication of future sales.

How it competes and what it buys

The controlled motion market is highly fragmented. Allient names Ametek, Parker Hannifin Corporation and Regal Rexnord among its competitors, and says some competitors are substantially larger. It also says it can provide custom-engineered solutions that integrate its motors with embedded or external electrical controls.

Engineering and development is 7% of sales, and the company says it is critical to its success. Allient holds several patents and trademarks and has patents pending on recently developed products.

It buys some critical raw materials from a limited number of suppliers, because of technical requirements and long qualification processes. For these materials it keeps minimum safety stock levels and uses supply contracts.

Acquisitions and restructuring

On 22 September 2023, Allient acquired 100% of Sierramotion, which designs and engineers motion components and mechatronic solutions for robotic, medical, industrial, defense and semiconductor applications. On 11 January 2024, it acquired 100% of SNC Manufacturing Co., a maker of electrical transformers. The filing describes SNC's offerings as complementary to Allient's power quality capabilities.

In 2024 the company began its Simplify to Accelerate NOW program, which realigns its manufacturing footprint and streamlines the organisation. Assembly operations moved from Dothan to Tulsa, Oklahoma and Reynosa, Mexico, where Final Assembly, Integration and Test are core capabilities.

Where it operates and its people

Operations outside the United States run through wholly-owned foreign subsidiaries. The filing lists operations in The Netherlands, Sweden, Germany, China, Portugal, Canada, Czech Republic, Mexico, the United Kingdom and New Zealand. Allient also has manufacturing operations in Mexico, China and Europe.

About 63% of employees are in North America, 29% are in Europe and the remainder are in Asia-Pacific. Engineering functions employ 14% of the workforce.
