What the company does
Spectrum Brands Holdings, Inc. is a diversified global branded consumer products and home essentials company. It manufactures, markets and distributes its products across North America, Europe, Middle East & Africa, Latin America and Asia-Pacific. It sells through retailers, wholesalers and distributors. The company is managed in three product focused segments: Global Pet Care, Home and Garden, and Home and Personal Care. It has approximately 3,000 full-time employees worldwide.
How the business is organised
Each of the three segments is vertically integrated and has a business unit president who is responsible for sales and marketing and for the financial results of all product lines in the segment. Global and geographic strategic initiatives and financial objectives are set at the corporate level, and each segment carries out its own. Center-led shared service functions support the segments: finance and accounting, information technology, legal and human resources, supply chain and commercial operations.
What it sells
Global Pet Care sells companion animal products, dog and cat food, and aquatics products. Companion animal products include rawhide and rawhide free chews and treats, clean-up, training, health and grooming items, and small animal food and care. Aquatics covers aquarium kits, tanks, filtration systems, heaters, pumps, fish food and water care.
Home and Garden sells household controls, outdoor controls, repellents and cleaning products.
Home and Personal Care sells small kitchen appliances such as toaster ovens, coffeemakers, slow cookers, air fryers and blenders, along with cookware and cookbooks. It also sells personal care appliances such as hair dryers, flat irons, electric shavers and beard trimmers. Some sales in this segment are direct to consumers through direct response television, brand websites and online marketplaces.
Who it sells to
Sales go through a direct sales force and a network of brokers and distributors. Each segment depends on a small group of large retail customers, each above 10% of segment sales:
- Global Pet Care: Amazon and Walmart, together about 34% of segment sales. - Home and Garden: The Home Depot, Lowe's and Walmart, together about 64% of segment sales. - Home and Personal Care: Amazon and Walmart, together about 42% of segment sales.
Seasonality
Home and Garden sales peak in the first six months of the calendar year. In the year covered, the segment's quarterly shares of annual net sales were 16%, 27%, 33% and 24%, from the first fiscal quarter to the fourth. Home and Personal Care sales rise in the December holiday season and in late summer for back-to-school, with quarterly shares of 30%, 22%, 22% and 26%. Global Pet Care sales stay mostly consistent through the year, at 24%, 25%, 24% and 27%.
Where products are made
Home and Garden makes the majority of its products at one facility in Vinita Park, MO, mainly liquids and aerosols. Third-party manufacturers make its granulates, candles, baits and traps, wipes and Rejuvenate® cleaning products. Its distribution center is in Edwardsville, IL.
Global Pet Care makes aquatics and some other companion animal products at plants in the U.S. and Germany. These include glass aquariums in Noblesville, IN, shampoos and aquarium salt in Blacksburg, VA, OmegaSea® fish food in Bridgeton, MO, and most Tetra® aquatics products in Melle, Germany. Most chews and other aquatics equipment are made by third-party suppliers in the APAC region.
Substantially all Home and Personal Care products are made by third-party suppliers in the APAC region. For the U.S. business, most products are imported from southeast Asia, with the majority coming from China. The company owns most of the tooling and molds used by its suppliers. It says U.S. tariffs on imports affect all segments, most of all Home and Personal Care.
Brands and licences
The company owns most of its brands. Black+Decker® and Emeril Legasse® are used under trademark licence agreements. The Black+Decker licence covers certain home appliances in North America and Latin America and runs to 31 December 2027, with two four-year renewal rights that could extend it to 31 December 2035. The Emeril licence expires on 31 December 2027. Live fish under the GloFish® brand are produced and sold by an independent third-party breeder under a supply and licensing agreement.
How it competes
The company says its markets are highly competitive and that it competes on brand strength, product innovation, quality, performance, advertising, value and its relationships with retail partners and distributors. Named competitors include Mars Corporation, Nestle Purina and Central Garden & Pet in pet care. In home and garden they include The Scotts Miracle-Gro Company and S.C. Johnson & Son, Inc. In home and personal care they include SharkNinja, Newell Brands, Conair Corporation and Koninklijke Philips Electronics N.V.
Its people
About 32% of the labour force is covered by collective bargaining agreements. None is scheduled or expected to expire within the next 12 months. The company states its mission as "Make Living Better at Home" and lists trust, accountability and collaboration as its values.
