What the company does

Commerce Bancshares is the bank holding company for Commerce Bank, headquartered in Missouri. It was incorporated under the laws of Missouri on August 4, 1966, and owns the bank through a second tier wholly-owned bank holding company. The bank provides retail, mortgage banking, corporate, investment, trust and asset management products and services to individuals, businesses and municipalities. The company describes itself as one of the nation's top 50 bank holding companies by asset size.

Where it operates

Its principal markets are served by 140 branch facilities, located mainly in Missouri, Kansas and central Illinois, plus Tulsa and Oklahoma City, Oklahoma and Denver, Colorado. St. Louis and Kansas City are its two largest markets and serve as central hubs. It also has offices in Dallas, Houston, Cincinnati, Nashville, Des Moines, Indianapolis, Grand Rapids and Naples that support commercial and wealth customers, and a commercial payments business with sales representatives covering the continental United States. Customers reach the bank through branches, ATMs, online banking, a mobile application and a centralized contact center. The company calls its approach a super-community banking format: large bank products with bankers assigned to each local market and regional advisory boards.

Three segments

The Commercial segment provides corporate lending, merchant and commercial bank card products, payment solutions, leasing and international services, along with business and government deposit, institutional brokerage and cash management services. The Retail Banking segment, previously called the Consumer segment, covers the retail branch network, consumer installment lending, personal mortgage banking and consumer debit and credit cards. The Wealth segment provides trust and estate planning, consumer brokerage, and advisory and discretionary investment portfolio management for personal and institutional customers. In 2025 the three segments contributed 48%, 28% and 24% of total segment pre-tax income.

Acquisitions

On January 1, 2026 the company completed its acquisition of FineMark Holdings in an all-stock transaction, and FineMark National Bank & Trust merged into Commerce Bank. FineMark has 13 banking offices in Florida, Arizona and South Carolina, and it adds to the Wealth segment. In the second quarter of 2023 the company acquired L.J. Hart & Company, a municipal bond underwriter and advisor.

People

At December 31, 2025 the company employed 4,577 people full-time and 160 part-time. None of its employees are represented by collective bargaining agreements.
