What the company does
OFG is a financial holding company headquartered in San Juan, Puerto Rico. Its principal subsidiary is Oriental Bank, an FDIC insured Puerto Rico commercial bank founded as a federal savings and loan in 1964. OFG reports three segments: Banking, Wealth Management, and Treasury. The Bank has 42 branches in Puerto Rico and 2 in the U.S. Virgin Islands, and the company had 2,185 employees on 31 December 2025.
How the business is organised
Most products and services go to clients in Puerto Rico and the USVI, and certain loan products go to clients in the continental United States.
- Oriental Financial Services, a securities broker-dealer and investment adviser. - Oriental Insurance, an insurance agency. - OFG Reinsurance, a captive reinsurance company based in the Cayman Islands. - OFG Ventures, which holds investments. - OFG USA, a commercial lender organized in Delaware that operates out of Charlotte, North Carolina. - OBPEF, a private equity fund under the Puerto Rico Incentives Code that provides senior or subordinated debt financing to eligible borrowers to support the economic development of Puerto Rico.
The Bank also has two international banking entities, Oriental Overseas and Oriental International Bank, Inc. Their services are limited under Puerto Rico law to persons and assets or liabilities located outside of Puerto Rico.
What it lends
Loans fall into four categories.
- Commercial: 42.6% - Auto: 32.1% - Mortgage: 17.0% - Consumer: 8.3%
Auto loans for new or used vehicles come mainly through dealers authorized and approved by the auto credit department. Consumer loans include personal loans, residential solar panel loans, credit cards and lines of credit. Commercial term loans generally run from one to five years, and commercial lines of credit generally have maturities of one year or less.
Through a division of the Bank, OFG originates FHA insured, VA guaranteed and USDA Rural Housing Service guaranteed mortgages. These are primarily securitized into GNMA mortgage-backed securities. Conforming conventional loans are securitized into FNMA or FHLMC securities or sold through the GSE cash window. The Bank is an approved GNMA issuer and an approved seller of FNMA conforming loans. It acts as master servicer for the pools it issues or services. More than 90% of its residential mortgage portfolio is fixed-rate, fully amortizing and fully documented.
The U.S. commercial loan program buys participations in credit facilities to middle-market and lower middle-market borrowers on the mainland. These loans were 10.1% of the gross loan portfolio held for investment.
How it funds itself
Customer deposits are OFG's principal funding source. The Bank gathers them through its branches and a digital sales platform. It offers personal and commercial checking accounts, savings accounts, certificates of deposit and IRAs.
- - - Savings: 22.0% -
The Bank is also a member of the Federal Home Loan Bank of New York, from which it can borrow.
Wealth management and treasury
Oriental Financial Services is a FINRA member. It offers tax-advantaged fixed income securities, mutual funds, stocks and bonds, plus separately managed accounts. It clears transactions through Pershing LLC. Oriental Insurance earns commissions as a licensed agent for policies issued by unaffiliated insurers. OFG Reinsurance reinsures credit insurance on consumer loans originated by the Bank, as well as personal accident and health policies underwritten by unaffiliated insurers. Oriental Trust, the Bank's trust division, provides trustee and paying agent services to retirement plans in Puerto Rico.
Treasury covers OFG's treasury-related functions and its investment portfolio. FNMA and FHLMC certificates made up 80.3% of that portfolio and GNMA certificates 17.3%.
Competition and strategy
Puerto Rico is the main market. OFG competes with other banks, brokerage firms, credit unions, savings and loan cooperatives, small loan companies, insurance agencies and mortgage banks.
The company describes its strategy as becoming a truly digital bank, and says it rests on four pillars: Customer Insights & Personalization, Human Connection, Digital Bank and Business Excellence.
Who regulates it
The Federal Reserve Board supervises OFG as a financial holding company. The Bank's main regulators are the Office of the Commissioner of Financial Institutions of Puerto Rico and the FDIC. The Bank became subject to Consumer Financial Protection Bureau supervision in 2024, and its USVI activities are overseen by the USVI Banking Board.
Its people
None of the 2,185 employees is represented by a collective bargaining group. Average tenure was 11 years at 31 December 2025. In its most recent Gallup employee engagement survey, 93% of employees participated.
