What the company does
Byline Bancorp, Inc., headquartered in Chicago, Illinois, is a bank holding company. It conducts all its business through Byline Bank, an Illinois-chartered full service commercial bank, and that bank's subsidiaries. The bank serves small and medium sized businesses, commercial real estate investors, financial sponsors and consumers, mainly through 44 branches in the Chicago metropolitan area and one in Wauwatosa, Wisconsin. As of 31 December 2025 the company had 1,027 employees.
How the business is organised
The company reports one segment. Its chief operating decision makers review the business on consolidated information when allocating resources and assessing performance. The holding company does not run any non-banking activities through non-bank subsidiaries. It has not elected to be a financial holding company.
What it sells
Commercial banking is described as a fundamental part of the business.
- Commercial & Industrial: term loans, revolving lines of credit and treasury management for small and lower middle market businesses. - Commercial real estate: fixed and floating rate term loans, construction financing and revolving lines of credit for experienced real estate professionals. The loans cover multifamily, industrial, retail and office properties. - Sponsor finance: senior secured financing for private equity backed lower middle market companies across the U.S. - Syndications: participation in syndicated loans and purchases of whole loans or participations from lead banks. The filing says this is now a smaller part of the portfolio. - Small Business Capital: SBA and USDA loans, which the filing calls U.S. government guaranteed loans.
The bank was the tenth most active originator of SBA 7(a) loans in the country and the most active SBA 7(a) lender in Illinois, as reported by the SBA for its fiscal year ended 30 September 2025. It generally sells the government guaranteed portion into the secondary market. It keeps the non-guaranteed portion and the servicing rights, which produces gain on sale income and a recurring servicing and interest stream.
Byline Financial Group, a subsidiary of the bank based in Bannockburn, Illinois, provides small ticket equipment leasing. It works with equipment vendors and their end users in manufacturing, small equipment construction, wholesale and healthcare. It has lessees in nearly every state, and its leases have a weighted average life of approximately 3.1 years.
Trust and wealth management serves foundations, endowments and high net worth individuals. Services include fiduciary and executor work, financial planning, investment advisory and private banking.
Who it lends to
By industry, real estate was 35.9% of the portfolio, manufacturing 12.1%, finance and insurance 9.5%, wholesale trade 6.5% and accommodation and food services 5.0%.
How it funds itself
The branch network gathers deposits that fund most of the bank's loans and leases. Deposit products include non-interest-bearing accounts, money market demand accounts, savings, interest-bearing checking and time deposits with maturities from seven days to five years. Core deposits, defined as all deposits except time deposits above $100,000, were 87.0% of total deposits. Commercial deposits were 43.0% of total deposits and 85.1% of non-interest bearing deposits. The top 50 customers held approximately 13.6% of deposits. The bank is also a member of the Federal Home Loan Bank of Chicago.
Earnings depend substantially on net interest income. Non-interest income comes mainly from deposit fees, loan servicing, wealth management and trust fees, ATM and interchange fees, and gains on loan sales. It made up 13.65% of total revenues.
Where it operates
The Chicago metropolitan area is the primary market, and the branch network there is the core distribution channel. Since its recapitalization in June 2013 the branch count has fallen from 88 to 45, including 24 branches added through acquisition. The First Security acquisition closed on 1 April 2025. SBA lending is national, with a primary focus on the Midwest, Tennessee, Florida, Texas, Colorado, Utah and California. The company says it aspires to be the preeminent commercial bank in Chicago.
Competition and regulation
The bank competes for loans, leases, deposits and customer relationships with other financial holding companies and commercial banks, internet banks, savings and loan associations, FinTech companies, credit unions, and trust and wealth management providers. Competition rests on the variety, rates and terms of products and services and on the performance of funds under management.
The Federal Reserve Board supervises the holding company under the Bank Holding Company Act of 1956. Byline Bank is not a member of the Federal Reserve. Its primary regulators are the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation and the Illinois Department of Financial and Professional Regulation.
Its people
Of the 1,027 employees, 1,018 work full time and nine part time. They are located mainly in the Chicagoland and greater Milwaukee, Wisconsin areas. None are covered by a collective bargaining agreement. The company runs an annual engagement survey with over 94% participation.
